How
does Spatone compare to iron pills?

Note: It is important that you read this entire page to fully understand what is being suggested.

This chart indicates the approximate number of Spatone sachets required to deliver potentially the equivalent amount of iron compared to varying strength Iron Sulphate pills at different absorption/bioavailability levels. Remember, on average, only 30% of the pills total iron content is elemental (i.e. available for absorption).

Iron Pills Average 30% Elemental Iron Content 1 Bio-Availability Potential Delivered 2 Equivalent Spatone Sachets to potentially deliver the same quantity of iron
65mg 19.5mg 3% 0.5mg 0.25
65mg 19.5mg 10% 1.9mg 1.0
100mg 30mg 3% 0.9mg 0.5
100mg 30mg 10% 3mg 1.5
200mg 60mg 3% 1.8mg 1
200mg 60mg 10% 6mg 3

Note the above figures are a guide only.

1 Iron bioavailability can decrease considerably as the amount taken increases above 100mg
2 Assumes clients/customers are iron insufficient, Spatone Bioavailability of 40% is used throughout the comparison even at the 3 sachet usage. The total amount of iron administered is only 15mg therefore a drop in bioavailability should not occur.

Spatone is an ideal alternative for people who cannot tolerate high dosage oral iron and are therefore non compliant because of side effects such as constipation and general G I complaints. Spatone is also useful in cases when tolerance and compliance is good, but, there is concern about administering high quantities of iron over a long period, or there is no assimilation.
